ALOHA!

Going to Maui by cruise ship means that you will dock in Kahului.

To really experience Maui, you need to get away from the cruise port! Anything within walking distance will not really provide you with a true Hawaii experience.

Maui is a port that you should really consider getting a car. There are so many great places to go that you need a car (or a tour) to get to.

People (cruisers) also do report that uber works well on a cruise ship visit too.

There is a bus system on Maui, and if you want to choose just one activity or main area of the day, then it can also be reasonable to choose an activity to do by bus.

HAWAII CRUISE TIPS > MAUI | BIG ISLAND | HONOLULU

All cruise ships dock on Maui at the same Kahului cruise terminal (map).

On google maps, you can find this listed as “Norwegian Cruise Line” in Kahului, but all cruise lines for Kahului dock here, including NCL, Princess, Holland America, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and more.

Just for your information you can see the Kahului cruise port schedule.

To plan your day on Maui from a cruise ship, I’ve created a google map below that includes some of the best things you can do on your own, which is based on my time on Maui. I have rented a car on Maui to do a bunch of the best things, and I’ve also done a bunch of things without a car by bus to do more very Hawaii things!

You can decide if you want to do any of these things!

But first!
Top Hawaii excursions you must consider for classic Hawaii experiences!

And second, quick tips!

Again, Maui is a port that you should really consider getting a car.

You need a car to go to places like Haleakala National Park, the north of West Maui, and the far south of South Maui… all of which are worthy seeing! (Although you’ll have to choose just one or 2 for your one day on Maui!)

You may want to download the Shaka guide before you go to be your guide driving around the island.

If you have an overnight on Maui, then you’ll also want to consider the Road to Hana for greenery and waterfalls, waterfalls, and more waterfalls! This is typically an all-day thing, which is why it’s better to do it when you don’t have to be back somewhere at a certain time!

I have a Road to Hana map for that!

You’ll rent a car from the main Maui airport, which is the Kahului airport (OGG) a 10 minute drive from the cruise port.

You can catch the bus about a 20 minute walk from the cruise port, which means you can go anywhere the bus goes! The main places you can go to start your search are Kihei, Wailea, Kaanapali, Kapalua, and Paia.

Well, you may or may not want to consider Kapalua because it’s 2.5 hours by bus from Kahului. But, that is up to you and your priorities! I would suggest looking into Wailea. It will take about an hour to get there by bus. Google maps is all you need to navigate by bus! You can go to Ulua Beach for snorkeling and then walk the coastal walking path (called the “Wailea Beach Path”) from there!

The Road to Hana is not something you can do without a car, and if you are on a Sunday cruise ship arrival, here is your Road to Hana cruise excursion.

The Haleakala summit is another thing you can’t do without a car, and the Haleakala sunrise tours are popular. (You also need an overnight on Maui for the sunrise.) See the Haleakala tour on viator and the Haleakala tour on getyourguide.

A trip to a Maui pineapple farm is another thing a lot of people really like.

If you have an overnight on Maui, then luau with a fire show is a fun Hawaiian experience and something you must consider!

Otherwise, you can see about doing the luau with a fire show in Honolulu!

Now, here is the interactive google map of Kahului cruise port that I created!

This includes best things to do in Maui.

👆 How to use this map: Click on the top left icon for a list of what’s on the map! Or, just start clicking the icons on the map! Each icon has more details, so click to expand! If the map isn’t loading well for you, you can also open it directly in google maps. If you click through on mobile: After clicking on a little icon, the name of the activity will show up.
