Walking from Papeete cruise port for 1 hour from cruise ship

I went to Papeete by cruise ship. It was on a Princess cruise ship during a transpacific repositioning cruise.

All in all, it was a nice day in Papeete!

Pretty much upon walking off the cruise ship, it was in the main area of downtown Papeete. I just did a little walking around, and I’ll show you pictures below of this walk.

Papeete is the “big city” of Tahiti, and it felt like it with the hustle and bustle of it. Basically I ended up walking to the tourist information center which was pretty much right there, then I walked along the waterfront trail.

I didn’t really go to it (I just passed by), but one of the main attractions of downtown Papeete is the Marche de Papeete aka the Papeete Market.

The “main activity” of my one day in Papeete was a snorkeling excursion in the afternoon through the cruise line. So in the morning, I got off the cruise ship for a short walk around town, then went back to the cruise ship for food, and then it was time for my snorkeling tour.

 

It’s important to note that I was there in October 2023, and things can change!

Still, you can see a little bit about what walking around the town of Papeete is like!

 

 

First things first… Papeete is pronounced more like pa-pe-e-te, with the vowels being similar to Spanish vowel sounds! Listen for “Marche de Papeete” at around the 5 second mark in this French news video.

What I saw walking from Papeete cruise port

Just for reference of how much walking is involved to see things walking off the cruise ship, I’ve included the time stamp of the pictures.

 

👆 I walked off the cruise ship at 10:20am. There will be many places where you will be told what time you need to be back on the cruise ship in Papeete. This includes a sign as you are walking off the cruise ship. Take a picture of it so you have no doubt about remembering!

 

👆 Town up ahead! Literally just a couple of minutes of walking from the cruise ship!

 

👆 The waterfront trail was within minutes of walking off the cruise ship.

 

👆 It was just a few minutes to get to the Tahiti visitor center.

👆 The Papeete Market is an easy walk from the cruise port. This seems to be a good place to do some souvenir shopping.

Final cruise tips!

👆 There will be signs all around the cruise ship with what time you need to be back on board on Papeete day. Also be sure you take with you on land a government issued photo ID.

 

👆 No one plans to have problems when they leave the cruise ship. But take a picture of the Papeete port agent information just in case you do end up having some sort of problem! You will also see this all over the cruise ship on the morning of Papeete day.

 

The sailaway from Papeete was incredible! There was a silhouette of the neighboring island of Moorea at sunset. So as always, be sure to get out on the open deck as the cruise ship starts sailing away from port! Sailing into Papeete was pretty amazing too! Wake up early for it!
